I'm sure this board has its share of deer hunters who wait a long time in a tree stand for that perfect shot. Now, they have an option for at least bringing their mando with them (although playing it might be problematic for enticing deer). Maybe if they played appropriate songs like "Forked Deer", "Church in the Wildwood", etc...

You might need to comine the carbonfiber mando with the camo version and you have a camoflaged, all-weather mandolin.

No...I was just kidding. Although if it did he probably still would have taken it home!

This was a pleasant surprise, a small builder from Scottsdale, AZ-- Gypsy's Music. As you can see a wide range of inexpensive flat-tops, woods including Walnut, American Maple, and some others. These were a gas to play, made me late for an important appointment, I was having so much fun. I'm sure you'll be hearing more about these soon! (Hope to do an in-depth review.)
Stranger, they have no indication of prices on their site, so I emailed them and got some anti-spam protection msg and replied to that and it bounced back. Anyone know how to contact these folks.

Perhaps, Ted, if you see them, you can get some more info or at least tell them to fix their site.

Okay, Larry. Here's the back of the Sunburst Royale. I love this color but since I've got a thing for blondes (mandolins, that is & please don't tell Mrs. Mandohack), I'm actually taking a blonde Royale home with me.

Got a chance to go to the Gibson both. I shot pictures of both mandolins out of their entire display. Here's the new A9 finish.

The Sam Bush continues to be a success at Gibson. The other mandolin they brought:

Back to the Gypsy's Music booth for more pictures. I'm really impressed with what they are doing, a great assortment of exotic hardwoods, Grover gold and chrome tuners, bone bridge, and adjustable truss rod into a proprietary neck/body joining. Here are Juan Villescas (artist/educator with a background in Fine Arts) and Walt Kuhlman (classically trained guitar builder) showing off a walnut back, purpleheart back, and the Spruce/Maple:

i like the solid brown on the 9-series better than the burst. the one i played at the showcase was a very nice mandolin, but the burst was way to dark for my liking. the bush model looks good as always though.

Gordon Robert's new project from Flaxwood, the Ultra Series Mandolins (& Guitars). These amazing instruments though concept instruments at this point offer an amazing approach to acoustic/electric playing. They sound and feel great, cosmetics still to be worked out (not really sexy just yet) but run through an amp, offer one of the most convincing acoustic sounds I've ever heard out of a plugged-in instrument. The Finnish Luthiers have made a very functional instrument. It will be fun to watch where Gordon goes with this project!

I too e-mailed Gypsy Mandos and got an "undeliverable msg" back. Then this morning I checked and Walt, did in fact, receive and reply. He stated he would be back in AZ on Monday and indeed the models were offered as lefties. I see a phone no. is given on their site. Mike

These retail for under $700 generally, with some of the more custom models hovering around $1K. They were a pleasure to play, complex & sophisticated sound coming out of so simple a form. They tend to be a bit deeper than other flattops and a little wider on the bottom of the body, so there's some good volume (well-tested on a noisy ambient trade show floor!).

I suspect we'll be hearing more from Wayne and Juan when they get back from the convention. They were as interested in this community as you all are in them!

Visually, these new Gypsy's Music mandolins are similar to John Troughton's design in his book The Mandolin Manual. I'm looking at it right now. In Troughton's design, the side pieces are anchored into slots cut in the neck block. Externally the neck joint looks very similar to the joint in the book. Ted - is this how Wayne and Juan design theirs too? I'm very curious to see how they sound.

    Thanks for the photos

So Gibson only had two mandolins on display? Wow.

Yeah, if that's true it's more than a little strange. Also, I gotta say I like the old color of the A9 better. Sunbursts usually look silly to me on A modles.

Just wanted to throw in a quick comment here. The most impressive thing I saw was Peter Mix's carbon fiber mando. I have to admit that I was completely wrong on this one having heard a number of attempts at violins over the years and been singularly unimpressed with them I was worried that Peter was making a huge mistake. I expected a boxy sound with few overtones. WRONG! Just a fabulous instrument. The hit of the show for me.
    Gordon
ps. All of us manufacturers are so proud of what Peter is doing, what a way to turn around what could have been the most negative year of his building career. Way to go MIX!

how does purple heart sound? i have a few purple heart plates and dishes that i got when i was down in Guyana and it seems just as hard (maybe harder) than ebony. do super tight grain woods like that resonate well? cause if so im going to get my hands on some pruple heart in the raw next time i go.

Here is the latest comment by a Gypsy mando owner:

Music is medicine for my soul. My mandolin is the dispenser. Not a day passes that I don’t do the “laying of hands” on my mandolin.

So important is my music to my peace of mind, I keep a mandolin at my home in San Diego, another on my boat and a third one at my home in Scottsdale.

My visits to my Arizona home were unsettling when I was forced to play an instrument for which I felt no affinity. When I learned Gypsy mandolins were actually manufactured just a half mile away, I took a walk on a whim. I entered and saw the selection of instruments. I began playing them one-by-one.

Sweet, easy to play, and each with its own unique character. I soon met and fell in love with one. A few minutes later, I was home again this time playing my new Gypsy. In the more than fifty years I’ve played musical instruments, it has rarely happened where I literally stumbled on the bird that sings so beautifully. So it was with my Gypsy.

The mandolin and I have become great friends. You might say . . . down through the valley so shady, I’ve become a Gypsy lover.

I have a photo of Howard with his mando, but haven't figured out how to post it yet.

Can't wait to try them out
