Right, I don't normally buy from Itunes beacuse I hate not having the CD and the artwork but...

I was soooo fed up with my sisters "popular" christmas music that I needed some good stuff...

What other good bluegrass christmas albums are available via iteunes - I found ricky skaggs family christmas, was hugely impressed by the samples - is it any good?

I personally like the Winter Solstice series on Windham Hill. Mike Marshall and other members from Montreux are featured. Not the usual cheesy Christmas stuff you've been beaten to death with.

My favorite has always been the "Charlie Brown Christmas: the Original Sound Track Recording" by Vince Guaraldi.

2nd Charlie Brown Christmas. It and David Grisman's Acoustic Christmas are in my CD player non stop this season (I try to listen to other stuff but I can never seem to hear CB X-mas enough).

John Doan's Wrapped in White is nice but not grassy. Look into A Very Special Acoustic Christmas.

This one has lots of blue/new grass artists and the money raised helps Special Olympics. Some good stuff on this one.

Yes, Evergreen is really good. The arrangements are available in a book of the same name, and are great fun to play.

My all-time #1 favorite Xmas recording is "What If Mozart Wrote 'Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas'?" by the Hampton String Quartet. No mandolins, but plenty of instruments tuned in 5ths.

    Hey pettyman,

I've got the David Grisman "Acoustic Christmas" and the "Skaggs Family Christmas" in my home stereo system right now! The Skaggs cd is very good. It features his wife, father-in-law, sister-in-law, and his kids along with his niece/nephew I think. I'll have to double-check on that. An all around good Christmas cd. Grisman's cd is still awesome after 20+ years!

Another vote for Vince Guaraldi's Charlie Brown CD.

And the most musical, soulful, and beautifully-recorded Christmas album I know of is Mike Marshall's "Midnight Clear". It's just Mike playing his D-28 solo. The arrangements, the playing, and the sound are all top-notch!

No mando content, but Ray Charles has a killer Christmas cd. #Little Drummer Boy knocks my sox off (the steel guitar entrance raises the hair all the way down my arms), especially the blues vamp at the end. #Santa Claus Is Coming To Town is pretty cool, too. The guy was such a genius. I miss him.

Hipster's Holiday is a great jazz CD. Has Satchmo (Is Dat You, Santy Claus?), Etta James (Santa Baby) and Bob [last name] (Blue Xmas, with the Miles Davis Quartet).

Also, for mando, Butchie's Gifts, with a swinging version of Sleigh Ride, with killer solos by Aubrey and Richard Kriehn...I mean killer solos.

Here's a few of my favs:

Tuck Andress - Hymns Carols and songs about snow (great solo jazz guitar; very tasty)

Vince Guaraldi Trio - A Charlie Brown Christmas (a must have)

Harry Connick's - When My Heart Finds Christmas(swings like crazy)

The Mills Brothers - Merry Christmas (a classic)

    Celtic Christmas - CMH records

Yellow Jackets - Peace Round (In a Silent Night is very cool)

The Ventures Christmas Album (retro baby)

A Very Special Acoustic Christmas - (love Sam Bush's Let it Snow)

Peter Ecklund w/ Howard Fishman Quartet - Christmas at the Almanac Hall (Peter is a member of Bromberg's big band, this CD has a warm toasty feel to it)

Check out Dan Landrum's "Winter Mix":

    http://cdbaby.com/cd/landrum4

Not quite bluegrass, but not quite your normal "pop" stuff either.

If you don't know Dan, he's one of the top hammered dulcimer guys out there. He toured with Yanni (yeah, I know) for a few years. He's taking the instrument places it hasn't been before. He happens to live a few houses away from me and I've had the opportunity to get to know him pretty well and play with him a bit. I was even fortunate enough to be invited to play on three of the tracks on the CD (guitar).

    Best,

    Trey

A few additional options available via iTunes:
Christmas Grass and Christmas Grass Too
A Very Special Acoustic Christmas has Dan Tyminski, Alison Krauss, Earl Scruggs, etc.

Also, it's not bluegrass contains mandolin and piano:
Alan and Bonnie Epstein - Come In From The Cold

A beautiful Christmas cd, an older one by classical mandolinist, Marilynn Mair and guitarist, Mark Davis, is
The Sounding Joy. Available from Marilynn Mair--classical guitar and classical mandolin, and some wonderful (and not to often heard) Carols.

Martin Taylor and Mike Marshall both just smoke their guitar parts on that Acoustic Christmas disc. A gem indeed!

Yep, great stuff. Pulled mine out of the stacks yesterday and it's ready to be spun up tonight while we decorate, the first of many likely listening sessions over the next few weeks. Plus it puts more mandolin music into the household's rotation, so that's a bonus!
