One good thing about WSM carrying his own Martin is it would make it easier to change guitar men in a hurry...he would only have to ascertain that they could pick and sing...."No time to go home and get your stuff boy, we're leaving NOW......"

But Amsterdam was always good for grieving
And London never fails to leave me blue
And Paris never was my kinda town
So I walked around with the Ft. Worth Blues

I don't remember where I found that picture.
Maybe I got it from Mike.
That is/was Diana Christian on Bill's right, is it not?
I remember the night of this photo of Monroe and Rice.Originally Posted by (Geno @ Dec. 15 2006, 11:41)
Monroe use to allow me to record all the SF shows
through the mixing board. I am not sure if this was
the night we opened for Monroe or not right now.
It was earlier that night there at the
Great American Music Hall where this photo was
taken, that Kenny Baker said out loud and with
Monroe off to his side, that he never listened
to the words to songs and that he could not remember
the words to any of the songs if you asked him too.
Monroe turned his head and looked at Kenny. #Ha ha..
Kenny was making the point that he focused on the
melodies and not the words. #
I am sure Baker was just talking...
However, once when I was sitting around at Baker's farm
on his front porch there was a mandolin there. #I played
a split string on it and Baker watched then said that
he had never heard of such a thing. #I didn't believe it
at first but surely after some questioning he appeared
to have never heard of it. #Well, I said, your boss
plays split strings all the time. #:-)
Who knows what people notice... #I guess...

Bill's MARTIN... - now if THAT guitar ever shows-up - and can be "documented""....(and yes, I've heard..."stories" too!??) - Moose. # #
The early recording of "Mule Skinner Blues" with Bill Monroe flogging that guitar on the Grand Ole Opry is where bluegrass begins, in my opinion. The power, the "bluegrass time," the high lonesome sound--it all crystalizes in that one performance.
By the way, F5loar jogged my memory about Bill's D-28. Someone interviewed Peter Rowan many years ago (can't remember the source) and he said that Monroe lent him his old 'bone to play while singing lead with the BG Boys. Apparently someone made off with it while it was in Rowan's care--something that Mr. Bill wasn't too happy about! I'm surprised it was never recovered. Maybe they didn't have the serial number. Maybe F5loar knows more of the story.

There is nothing finer than a 7 year old thread.

They're like chili or good whiskey, they need to age.
Well, there's always Bill Monroe playing Redd Volkaert's pink Telecaster....
Then there's this one that I've been holding onto since I found it last year.

Well when the Mule Skinner Blues was first recorded in 1940 it was consider the "New" version of the time.
