JLP, the one big difference is that you absolutely cannot flex the tortis pick--it will break!

Very true, although the medium and heavy would be difficult to flex.

I had a style C heavy --one of my first tortis picks-- and between tunes I was just flexing it between my fingers and all of a sudden, Snap! So don't even try it, you never know where that magic point of no return is.

That is what I play with - I'll make sure I don't flex them. I have seen some Tortis picks with serious checking going on; I wonder if they went through the washer/dryer. The only issue with my pick is that I tend to put it between my teeth when I change music sheets; the pick has tooth marks all over it - it does help with the grip!

    Unhappy

This Compton tortis pick I have read about. Where can I purchase one? The description is identical to my real shell pick. I could go for one of those. Lp

Red Bear Trading has a list of dealers on their web site.

You don't have to order through a dealer, if you want something special just contact Dave Skowron directly at Red Bear Trading.

I have ordered all of my Tortis picks directly through Dave. The charge is $21 shipped using PayPal. If you order through Dave, you can specify the type of bevel, the color of pick (tortoise, coral, ivory, jade, clown barf), any engraving you want done, and holes for grip. Contact him through email to see what he has available.

    Red Bear Trading

BTW, I don't have any financial interest in Tortis picks.

I just recieved a style E with speed bevel. I was curious to compare my old guitar pick to the New Tortis pick. I have to say that my initial impressions are very favourable. My hat is off to Red Bear Trading.

Just got my picks in, very happy with them.

Had to barrow 20 bucks to into a BG show, my buddy said "give me this pick and we'll call it even" after letting him strum around with it.

I ordered strait from Dave, nice guy, great product.

I just ordered an E model and was wondering if anyone knew what the physical dimensions of the pick are? I like a larger pick (Dawg is perfect, M150 is a little small). Help?

Soup, what are you talking about? Which picks are a buck-n-a-half, per?

I think he's talking about the Dawg picks. They sell for $1.25 at JDMC.

I've tried one of the Dawg picks. I like it better then the Goldengates, but it deosn't stand up against my Tortis.

Well yea, the "Dawg" picks ARE one example of high-priced picks, but I've seen others, in my surfing sessions on the web.

Seems that ALL the Tortoise (sp?) shell picks are in that price range ± .50 Cents, yes?

Tortis picks are 20 bucks. And you thought Dawgs were high priced.

Since my local guitar shops haven't heard of mandolin picks, and look at me kinda weird, I'm forced, (for now) to use the backside of my guitar picks, (of which I have many).

I've seen the online order sites but haven't bothered since good-ole guitar freebie "mediums" are still available at my local store.

I DO note however, that I find that I develop a very small nick in the center of the guitar pick backside, when I use the "guitar picks" and haven't figured out how THAT happens, yet.

Also of note, is the fact that I DO get a tonal difference from the pointed end to the rounded back end, (thanks to a thread in here some time ago). I prefer the back end of the pick sound.

Now if I could just keep my right hand pointer finger from touchin the strings when I pick, I'd be a happy camper!!

I've always had the same problem. I'd prefer the shoulder of the Dunlop Ultex picks but my index finger brushes the string and wears into my nail. I'm using Wegan M150s now but I'm really interested in the Tortis. From what I've been reading I think I'll get one and hope it doesn't break. So the style E heavy is the size of a Wegan M150?

If you take care of it, it shouldn't break.
