I've been getting interested in writing & recording some music and want to know if anyone can give some recomendations for recording software. I will laying tracks for guitar, mandolin, and bass. I am looking for a user friendly program thats affordable. I would like to spend no more than $250. At the moment I have a Tascam US-122 exteranl soundcard.

Any advice will be much appreciated.

I've used Audacity and other freeware/shareware programs, and Audacity is the best of those. I currently am using Adobe Audition v1.5. It's not the latest version, but it's plenty good for my simple needs (and likely yours). I had a US-122 a couple of years ago, but I am using an M-Audio Firewire Solo now. The USB Tascam worked fine for me, but I like the Solo better. I have less hassle with the drivers for some reason. Most people that know more than me on the subject recommend firewire these days anyway.

I purchased Peak LT and used it for a while then tried Audacity which is free and Audacity works better, wish I had know that before I spent the bucks. Try Audacity first before you spend the money, $250 can buy you a lot of strings, picks and mando stuff.

Audacity is good, and it's what i use. If you want a more traditional "mixer" look, try Krystal, also free.

If you use Audacity, don't forget to check the wiki for a lot of good information, settings, plugins, etc.
