Thread: Mandolins, a style, flat top

    OK,,,,,im hooked...i started another f style ,,i have the neck cut out and the sides and top together,,but got to thinking about the possiblity of making a a style flat top mandolin...anyone have any luck with those,,,i remembered a piano sound board i have tucked in the top of my shop thats about 150 yrs old....any suggestions,,,would love to try a flat top style and was wondering if necks are angled into body at all or striaght in with fingerboard on top?

    Lots of good British luthiers build flat top ' A ' style mandolins, ie. Fylde, Jimmy Moon, Thomas Buchanan, Phil Davidson etc. they are all very good and mostly described as ' celtic ' style.

    reb- In case you're interested, Don Kawalek does a mando-building workshop, using a flattop design. I think there's one coming up in October, and it's in VA. He supplies everything.....materials, tools, instruction, (and humor) - and by the end of a long weekend, the thing is built. NFI, just someone who enjoyed a previous workshop.
