It is with heavy heart I inform the Cafe that my friend, Charlie Derrington, has passed on. He was taken in a motorcycle accident last evening by a drunken driver in the wrong lane. He will most certainly be missed by the Bluegrass community as a whole, the Cafe, Gibson, and his family and many friends.

Please be in prayer for his wife, Susan, and their daughter, Anna, who is just about to enter her sophmore year in college. It is a terrible loss to us all. I have no information on arrangements yet. I will post them as they become available.
    Have a Great Day!

Lawson Peets called me at 7:00 this a.m. to tell me. A great man has left us, and one that everyone called friend pretty much. This is so sad, and he and his family will be in our thoughts and prayers.

Wow - my thoughts and prayers are with his family. Such a sad event. I have never met Charlie, but never heard a bad word about him, and certainly his work was outstanding.

    Awful.
I imagine many of us who never met him in person and only knew him through this forum and reputation will send thoughts and prayer to his family and co-workers.

Very sad to hear, but thank you for letting us know.

I'll always remember him as a kind and decent man who would talk to kings and paupers alike. He was a fair and skilled businessman, and he knew quality.

    RIP, Charlie Derrington.

Wow. This is shocking news. He was a great contributor to the bluegrass community and a member of this site. I enjoyed his responses here - I liked the fact that he took the time to be part of our community. He will be sorely missed.

I wish the best for his wife and daughter. He was a good man.

That such a tragedy could happen to this kind talented person is beyond belief. May his family know that he will be a constant presence in our lives as we play his mandolins. Rest in Peace. Doug

Wow what a shocker this morning. I only knew Charlie through a few private e-mails and the Forum but I always enjoyed his informative posts and admired his work.

If there is any kind of collection taken for his family please post I would be happy to contribute.

Tragic news. I was stunned to see this headline when I arrived at the cafe this morning. I never met Charlie but I had a some email correspondences with him. A very nice fellow. My thoughts and prayers are with him and his family.

Another innocent person killed by a drunk driver.

I never met Charlie, but I appreciated his contributions here. This kind of tragedy really puts things in perspective. I wish the best for his family.

Another end in the era of fine Gibson mandolins. Prayers for the family and friends who loved him so much. He was a great friend to me. He accomplished so much in life but he had so much more to give.

    Wow this is terrible.

I only met Charlie once at IBMA a few years ago. We had a good conversation about all sorts of mandolin related stuff. If it is possible to evaluate someone in the course of one single conversation, I can say without a doubt, he was a very cool person.

Secondly from his posts here on the forum, its very easy to be in his position and not want to communicate with the masses at a place like this. But it takes a real man to stand out here as a lightning rod for a company that is often maligned on forums such as these. We need more people like him in the world. Poeple who have the courage of thier convictions to stand up for what is right, and get in the trenches and rub elbows with the common folks.

He will be missed for sure. THankfully every time someone peeks their eyeball into a MM and reads his name they will remember him for the good that he did for our small instrument.

My prayers are with his family and friends. This news is very difficult to process. Charlie's dedication to the mandolin community has always been evident in his posts here at the cafe.

My deepest condelences to the Derrington Family and all his co-workers at Gibson.

Charlie's influence on the art of mandolin making and the history of Bluegrass has been profound and will continue to be felt for years to come.

Wow, this is a huge loss to us all. #I hope his family and friends know how much he was appreciated and liked here on the cafe.

I'll always remember when I was first getting into mandolins, I called up Gibson just wanting to ask a few questions. #I ended up getting Charlie and he took about 45 minutes out of his day just to talk mandolins to a complete stranger.

Another bluegrass great taken from us early by a Drunk Driver #
