Does anyone know the value of one of the first 50 Morgan
Monroe White Lightning Mandolins. I was told that since it was part of the first 50 made that it was valued at
$1500.00. Can anyone confirm or dispute this and do they
know of any other web sites than will support their
    position? Thanks. Glenn Hurley

If you want to get an idea of what it will sell for put it on eBay with a 4000.00 reserve and let the auction run. If it hit's the reserve do a happy dance and send me a nice gift. The price it gets to will be the value of the instrument on that market. If you're not sure re-list it and see if the price goes to the same place.

Generally, the Pac Rim mandolins depreciate about 21.2% to 30.25% within the first year and about 8.95% each year following, depending on how well they are taken care of. In contrast, a "first 50" run of a well-branded, sophisticatedly marketed product will only depreciate 27.45%.

As a caveat, 85.23% of my statistics and information are carefully researched for truth and accuracy on the internet. The other 21.77% is just numbers I make up on the spot...

I'm guessing it might go for around $600-650 at auction-I've followed them before. I was gonna have a field of blue w/ stars added in the corner of the body along with wavey red stripes.

In my opinion, anyone who would pay $1500 for a Morgan Monroe doesn't know the difference between a mandolin and a hennwhey.

Sorry no joke here, but I did get a quote on a new Morgan
Monroe White Lightening the MWl-1 not the beanblossom one
and it was 824.25 brand new. So the 600-650 was probably
right for resale value. Thanks. Glenn

I think maybe the corn is for making white lightening... if you drink enough of that, you might not mind paying $1500 for a White Lightening mando...

Digging out this old thread because I just got hit with the same urban legend that Glenn did. Someone offered to trade a White Lightning for a handmade instrument I'm selling for $1150 ... and he claimed that the White Lightning was the more valuable of the two instruments.

Having recently seen some old 1960s Kent electric mandolins go for seven or eight bills, I guess it is possible for a PacRim factory mandolin to actually appreciate in value over time ... although you'd have to factor inflation into the picture. But I'd sure like to know who is spreading the claim that the MM White Lightning is worth so darn much ... and whether any reputable dealer agrees.

$1500 'MM White Lightnin'. Don't know about that, can't see it myself, but to each his own. Now here where I live, "white lightnin' is not the term we use, if you say that we know you got to be a big city boy. We call it 'white mule', or just plain 'ol homemade whiskyor likker, which $1500 will purchase you 30 gallons, might get a little discount buying in bulks of 30. If it is brandy, apple, peach, pear, then the price is higher. I don't make it myself, but know a few who do, it is hard work, esp. if you do it the old way.

If I had one of those Morgan Monroes I would gladly exchange it for 30 gallons of the good stuff!

I am looking for any pictures of the White Lightning from personal collections; beyond what's available on an Internet search.

For what its worth, I owned a MM MCM-CB, the collectors model in Cherry Burst, for two years then sold it on Ebay for $200 more than I paid for it which was the going rate for them just after they had been discontinued. I had upgraded the tailpiece to an Allen style which had cost me $65.00. I saw one recently listed at $850 in a store. I paid $500 for mine and another $50 for the case. Older Korean made Kentucky's, especially the Dawg model, sell for far more than they originally retailed. I've also seen some of the early MK's go for a bit more than their original price too.
