Thanks, everyone, for all the kind words and complements!
Bill, I think you've put into words what it is that I'm trying to do with the F5. Something very similar to that might end up in my soon-to-be (I Hope) web site.

John, great looking instrument. Lucky is both the instrument, inspite of the number, and the owner. You work is taking on a nice personal feel to it. Congrats.

Now that's what a mandolin is supposed to look like. Superb!

    Thumbs up

John your usual great work. Your choice of stains, finish and of course your eye for detail have really produced an instrument that will certainly make someone very proud. Is this one for you or has it been sold? Lp

    Thanks Lane, and everyone.
This one was built to order, and is now in the hands of it's new owner. I wish I could afford to build myself one! (Actually, I will, when I can spare the time. Time = $, ya know.)

    Very nice!

I really like how the lines of your name in the headstock inlay seem to follow the aesthetics of the lines of the mandolin itself. SERIOUS attention to deatial there and its obvious.

If you did not notice that, please take a second look at Mr Hamlett's inlay. It follows the lines in the headstock and is so eqaully spaced etc. . .

I wish I could afford to be a new mandolin customer of sunburst's.

    Perhaps one day. . ..

Thanks for sharing the pics. Looks like you're getting the photo thing down as well.

    Outstanding.

I think the ridge of the scroll is moved a tad towards the rim compared to most mandolins, is this correct? Nice personal touch if that is the case!

The ridge is probably closer to the rim than most.
It's a feature that was pointed out to me on a Loar by it's owner many years ago. I suspect I've carried the trait one step further. I just eyeball those, and they probably vary a little.

Being the very proud new owner of this fine instrument, let me also add that the sound is every bit as amazing as John thought it would be, from this particular cut of sitka. It has a particularly warm, traditional-sounding chop coupled with a bright and powerful treble that really resonates through its lightweight body. Unbelievable volume. I can't decide whether to play it or just sit around and look at it. Awesome piece of work, John.

Another fine piece from sunburst there, looks like you've got a keeper. So classy! Any chance this one will be coming to Maury River or some other festival soon?

Planning to have it with me at Rocky Grass out in Colorado in late July. A virtuoso picker named Andy Thacker plays John's #6, and he is planning to be there with his as well. Hoping to hear him take a shot at the competition again. Last time he finished second, but he was playing a non-radiused Flatiron, if I'm not mistaken.

So I managed to get my hands on Lucky this summer, although a severed long finger tendon on my left hand has kept me from playing until this week. Came in a nice Bobelock case that I cleaned up, and I should probably strip it down and clean it up when I put on some fresh strings next week. Thought you all might like to see some recent photos of it.

Wonderful instrument, and one of my favorites to play--just feels right.
