    All,

If this has been beaten to death I apologize for the post and will try additional searches of variety.

As suggested http://www.mandolincafe.net/cgi-bin....6;st=25 by a voice of experience, Dale Ludewig a thread on, well...... I'll just quote Dale himself here.

[QUOTE] Maybe a thread could be started that didn't show pictures, but listed what tools a builder had and which of those they valued most. [QUOTE]

....thanks for the great information you all share here.

For me it is the following:
    tablesaw
    drillpress
    Dremel
    assortment of chisels and gouges
    files and rasps
    various fretwork tools
thickness caliper, of which I just made yet another one
    #12 finger plane
plus some home made tools like my body-forms and clamps

For me, the minimum must have list for power tools (yes, you can do it without power) is bandsaw, benchtop belt sander, drill press and a shop vac with a HEPA filter. Don't put off the last item, especially if you do any power sanding. A good dedicated dust collector would be better, but isn't a minimum. Things you will want but aren't absolutely necessary include a router and tablesaw, though if you don't have either then you will need a good circular saw. Also, a flex drum sander on the drill press is an awesome neck shaper.

My hand tool minimum includes a chisel, shallow gouge, a long plane and a short plane.

Are clamps tools? Senamtics aside, you will need a bunch. You need a very accurate steel ruler and if you're like me a magnifying visor to be as accurate as the ruler.

I must agree with the need for good dust collection. I covered my entire garage with dust before getting it into my stupid head that I needed a dust control system.

I like listening to music, so think my minimum would be:

    Without plugs:
    scrapers and burnisher,
    chisels,
planes (jointer, block, plough (for truss rod slots),
    scalpel,
router (no, don't look for the plug)
    gents saw
    brace
    marking gauge/gramil
    thickness caliper/gauge

And because life's too short, plug in:
    Dremel
    Bandsaw
    Drum/Thickness Sander
    </caution >
