    Thumbs up

I came across these today. Don't know anything about this guy. Unfortunately, the links are in "RapidShare", so you have to first click on the "free" button on the bottom of the page, then endure 15-20 seconds of nagging before they let you have the file, but they're worth it...

Cool! Eugenio sent me those links too, but I hadn't come across the photo before.

None. Same instrument, evolving independently in different countries.

Isn't the scale on a guitarra baiana typically a little shorter?

I found some interesting and surprising information here (click) through the emando site. Trio Eletrico, by the way, is a kind of electric band that plays on top of large trucks, something very common in Carnival in the Brazilian Northeast (where the state of Bahia is, from whence comes the name guitarra baiana). The kind of music they play is typically frevo, not choro. They play loud and fast.

Anyway, my understanding is that the typical guitarra baiana scale is about 13 inches. That's an adjustment from most mandolins, albeit a minor one. Many classical bowlback mandolins have the 13" scale length.
