Thread: Are All Tailpieces the Same?

    I just checked the base of the tailpiece ( cheap nickle plated)on my mandolin and a magnet will stick to it.

    Are all tailpiece bases of this type a steel or tin?

    Are there tailpiece bases that are brass?

    Is there a large difference in the tonal, and volume response between the two?

    All of the Gibsons are steel.
    None are made of tin, tin is so soft you could never bring even your G string to tune without ripping up the post.
    Yes, there are brass tailpieces but they are cast. Also considered bronze.
    Opinions differ, and each mandolin can react differently between tailpieces.

    Used to see some brass Gibson style tailpieces from time to time. Steel bases have generlly replaced brass so the "hooks" don't rip out.
