Do any of you Thile-heads out there have a favorite saying or quote from Chris Thile AKA MandoMan?

While stopping to tune at a concert in Glasgow last year: "Bill Monroe said, 'No A-string ever went to heaven!' "

"I love my Blue Chip picks, but sometimes I envy violinists. Hell, I envy violinists all the time — what with the amount of sound they can produce — but those bows... the amount of work that has gone into bow manufacturing. Sartory and Tourte, and Peccatte... those are bows that perform their function as well as anything made by humans can. I love how Michel at Wegen, and Matthew (Goins) at Blue Chip care so much about pick design. They're doing a killer job. But I hope they keep pushing, because I think there's another level. I don't know if it's a materials thing or shape thing, but it hasn't hit the level of sophistication that bows have by a long shot."

Do Lyrics count? I love these from his Nickel Creek tune Hanging by a Thread:

There's a kind of emptiness that can fill you
There's a kind of hunger that can eat you up
There's a cold and darker side of moonlight
There's a lonely side of love

There's a certain kind of pain that can numb you
There's a type of freedom that can tie you down
Sometimes the unexplained can define you
Sometimes silence is the only sound

I remember one quote from, I think, his early instructional DVD where he looked so young on the cover. He said (paraphrasing) that you should try to figure out where the important phrases are in a tune, and make sure you start a new phrase with a downstroke.

That doesn't always work with the Irish/Scottish trad tunes I play, but the idea of finding the phrases really stuck with me as an important way to analyze tunes I was learning. And yeah, a downstroke is more often than not a good way to signal that here's another phrase in a call-and-response melody in a reel, jig or similar tune even if it means breaking a pattern in your picking.

“You guys have no idea how good this room is.” Because I was there to hear it live as he stepped out in front of his mic to play the second half of his solo gig unamplified at the acoustically amazing Batte Center at Wingate University. Phenomenal night, and he was totally geeking out at the acoustics of that venue.

He said something similar in Glasgow. Royal Concert Hall New Auditorium. Played much of the gig away from the mic.
    You could hear everything.

Sorry, I figured, you know, Google, lol. Tiny place in Monroe, NC, that has no business having a room that acoustically good, but there it is. I also saw The Wailin’ Jennys there a few years ago and need to get the Batte Center’s line up back on my radar. We ate at an awesome farm to fork place before the show that night (The Stone Table, iirc) that, unfortunately, didn’t outlast the pandemic. Chris also wrote a song en route to Wingate from Charleston, SC, (at least per his report) that featured the Carolina Panthers (who were having a rough start after a good previous year, so that dates this a bit, lol) and BBQ sauces. It was back in the era of the “song of the week” thing he was doing on Live From Here. He was back to using Wegen TF-140 picks primarily (before the D’Addairio deal). As evidenced by all the random details I remember, it was an awesome night…

Chris Gray and Joseph Baker got my two favorites first! I don’t have a Loar, but I like to remind myself that all of these instruments are meant to be played, not babied; and I don’t generally do whiskey before breakfast, without at least a little sleep in between, but I agree with Mr.Thile - it’s an interesting concept (certainly one I’ve visited from the irresponsible side of the clock and sun; but man, it hurts more than it used to, to paraphrase Hank Williams Jr.).
