The ditch-burning season in Hoosierlandia is early April, when the verges and drains are ablaze along the county roads. The leaping flames and billowing smoke make it an ominous yet festive time. Sadly, fewer and fewer observe the custom these days.
Ditchburn is not far from here. It’s such a small place that it has no post office, gas station or grain elevator, and quite possibly no reason to even exist.
