Default What might cause this crack?

I bought this Thomann/Hora mandocello last year but haven't played it much as the action was a bit high. I dropped it off at a local guitar technician today and immediately she spotted a crack in the neck. It can be fixed but I'm wondering what sort of thing might cause this?

Looks to me like an outcome of poorly managed kiln drying, ie, too quick.

Those are usually caused by the instrument being dropped while in the case. The inertia of the mass of the peghead moving quickly (falling) and then suddenly stopping (hitting the ground) causes a "whiplash" crack. The tug of the strings already puts a preload on the wood so it takes less impact than we might think to cause a crack.

Thanks. I don't recall dropping it, but then it did get shipped across Europe and might have been there when it arrived.
