OMO helps to introduce the inaugural Cascadia Mandolin-Guitar Festival, a four-day conference of workshops by music virtuosi
The Oregon Mandolin Orchestra (OMO) will perform in an evening concert at the first annual Cascadia Mandolin Guitar Festival (CGMF) on June 9.
The concert will mark the OMO’s return to Astoria, where the orchestra last performed in 2017.
The concert also will continue the OMO’s ongoing expression of gratitude to the German Music Council, which has declared the mandolin the “Instrument of the Year 2023.” (https://rb.gy/nj84)
The Cascadia Mandolin-Guitar Festival, which runs June 8 to 11, has been organized by August Watters ( www.augustwatters.com), a distinguished composer, conductor and former professor at Berklee College of Music. Watters assembled an all-star festival music faculty that includes Alexey Alexandrov and Ekaterina Skliar, both virtuosi of mandolin and domra, a Russian folk instrument; Tim Connell, a master soloist and mandolin ensemble leader; and Celeste McClain, classical guitar.
The festival’s faculty will open the concert with an ensemble performance before the Oregon Mandolin Orchestra takes the stage.
For the OMO’s concert, Music Director Christian McKee has created an engaging, eclectic program that samples several eras, countries and genres. The effect is a musical potpourri ranging from classical and Brazilian choro to folk and jazz.
At 2 p.m. Sunday June 11, the CMGF Festival Orchestra will perform the festival’s closing concert. Doors open at 1:30 p.m. Tickets for each concert individually are $25. Tickets for both the opening and closing concerts are $40. Tickets can be purchased through Eventbrite at https://tinyurl.com/4erjhadx
