Is LaPlant still making mandolins? Does anyone know his waiting period and price?

    Thanks

I think Cheryl Watson (cwtwang@earthlink.net) has just taken delivery on her new LaPlant F-5 over at CoMando. Maybe you can catch her before she leaves for IBMA.

Since Lloyd doesn't have a web site, she may be your best bet. I think she waited about a year for hers. I don't know the price.

I've always liked the LaPlants that were sampled on the Mandotastings. Here's his address and phone number, but he has no website, and I don't think he has e-mail.

Lloyd is one of the finest people you will ever meet! He and his wife are nice people and very gracious. His instruments are very good and his twelve fret slot head may be the best I've every heard. Go Lloyd!

I know this is a subjective question, but how would you describe the tone? Thanks

The one I played was an F5. - I thought it had the tone of an "opened up" Gibson. Deep and rich.

At the bottom of Greg Boyd's mandolin page, he says he has a lot of information about LaPlant (and others) and to contact him for info.

I have two of Lloyd's mandos, my brother has one and my son has one. #We are all very happy with the instruments, deep loud tone. #My mando is about four years old and I haven't met anyone who didn't like it. #Been to Lloyd's a few times and you wont find a nicer guy to work with. #The wait is about a year but you might try his sons Don or Bill. #Both are building great instruments from the same wood pile. #Less wait and lower cost. #Good luck!

Matt Thompson in the band "Monroe Crossing" plays a LaPlant F5. #You might try listening to some tune samples on their web site to hear what it sounds like.

I have four LaPlant instruments - a varnished A-style, an A-style mandola (his first one), and a custom ordered D-style guitar built by Lloyd in 1990, and an F-5 (#5) made recently by his eldest son Don. #They are all wonderful instruments and definitely good value. #A friend has a new A style custom made by his son Bill and he just loves it.

Can anyone bring us up to date on what an F-5 might cost from Lloyd, Don, or Bill?

Wow!!! Talk about resurrecting an almost ten year old thread. A friend of mine, Lisa Horngren, has a LaPlant, and it is wonderful...I've met Lloyd a few times at SPBGMA...

His contact info is available on the builders page.

So, you can give Lloyd a call and find out and he probably can tell what Don and Billy are charging now too.

He is still making them. I would call him he usually has a couple around. He gets around 7000$ for a F. I have no idea what his sons get. He is a great man. I have #38 from the nineties. Go to a festival in Minnesota and you will see/hear a lot of them.

I bought my second Lloyd Loar F5 from Lloyd. He must be about 100 years old by now! You simply could not meet a nicer man, but, seriously, he must be in his later 80's by now..is he still building? He sent me that F5 with no payment, and had never met me!
    Go Lloyd!

Hardly a worn-out old man. I see him every winter at a fiddle convention in Arkansas. A great man, fiddle tune monster, nice guy.

I recently talked to Don about building me a mandolin and he said he is more focused on guitars now and his brother hasn't done any building in some time. Don said he may be open to building one in the future.
Best to call the man himself and see where they are at.

Yep, that's the Lloyd I met at IMBA, couple of years after buying the Loar. Very vibrant and young in body and spirit. Never did I say a worn out old man....
