Default New Mandolin Day: Muleskinner Instruments A5 (Birdseye/Spruce)

Taking a moment away from playing this beauty (while I sit on mute on a work teleconference call) to post.

Andy has truly outdone himself with this one.

Birdseye Maple neck, back and sides that was culled from the walls of an old logger's shop here in central Vermont. Word was that when he cut a really nice tree (far too nice for the wood stove) he milled up boards and kept them in his shop. This particular board was found after his passing by his son and a mutual friend of Andy and I, believing it may have sat there for 25+ years before finding new life with this mandolin.

The top is German Spruce from a treasured 100+ year old stock that Andy had. It has a BEAUTIFUL bark to it. Super dry and a really nice chop.

Koa binding. Rosewood headstock overlay and bridge.

The finish is a super subtle burst. Somewhere between a pumpkin top and a honey amber. The back photo doesn't do justice to the flame on that wood. Holographic, really and Andy's choice for the finish color really makes it shimmer.

I'll get a video and sound demo up once I get more acquainted with her and the instrument begins to open up a bit more in the next week or two.

Nice! Andy makes some of the coolest looking A styles out there. They play well and have great tone to boot.
