    Default The Strad/Guarneri Doctor

No mandolin content here, but an excellent article on John Becker, a luthier's luthier. He's considered the leading authority on repairing and maintaining Stradivari violins. https://www.chicagomag.com/chicago-m...=pocket-newtab

Ah, to me this is the other Becker. There are two Becker families from Chicago and both are remarkable for their skill and influence.

The one I'm familiar with is Carl F. Becker, violin maker and highly esteemed as the 'American Stradivarius'.

The two Beckers have 'crossed paths' at Lyon & Healy one generation apart (Carl was there in 1902 and John about 40 years later). I'm sure that the families know of each other. Regardless, we are graced with exceptional artists named Becker. (I'm an acquainted with Jennifer Becker in St. Paul).

    Here's their story.

Nice article, I will also add that John Montgomery, in Raleigh NC, has been maintaining the string instrument collection in the Library of Congress and the Smithsonian for over fifteen years. He has worked on some of the most famous Strads , Guarneri and Amiti violins known.

Well....that's what promotional newspapers do. However it does not tarnish the reputation of the artists / craftsmen (and women).

Whenever I hand a customer a $125,000 invoice for an instrument repair, I consider it polite to add a line item for unicorns and fairy dust.

Default NMC: article about man who restores Stradivarii

No Mandolin content but I thought this was interesting and relevant:

It's being discussed here as well.

Not bad for someone who doesn't sound like they write about violins all the time, only a couple of errors.
