I would never ever under any circumstance sell anything even remotely that valuable on ebay.

Nor buy. No matter what it is or who the seller might be.
Despite any "safeguards," there are too many things that can go wrong on an ebay transaction.

Even if buyer and seller are as honest as the day is long, if the shipper loses or crashes an instrument, you've got a big problem.
Someone will get hurt, and it won't be ebay or the shipper.

This belonged to Art Stern who was an active member here and owned a few others of John’s mandolins. IIRC he had a Radio Flyer made to his specs:

From estate of Master Stained Glass Artist Arthur Stern, incredible instrument, plays and sounds amazing. Storied object, Arthur has many musician friends in the Bay Area hung w/Jerry Garcia, hung with the "Warlords" to in last several decades visitors to his studio in Benicia, CA. have included, Sam Bush, Mike Marshall, David Grissom, and many others stopping by to listen to Arthurs 100K home sound system, or jamming on either of Arthurs Monteleone's, Mike Marshall has his A model right now, which may be available as well. This F5 was bought in late 79, early 80 in NY. # 64 incredible spruce top, AAA+ Flame Maple back, binding top & bottom, label inside is correct Monteleone, as well as signature. # address at time. Amazing Mandolin, sounding, playing, great case, well loved, played by the best!

I allways cherished SternArt´s contributions on this here forum.

Notwithstanding the personal connection between him and the mandolin I do think that the mandolin is highly overvalued. I do also think that the early Monteleone on the classifieds is overvalued.

Despite the fact that later Monteleone mandolins (and we are not talking about guitars) are quite a bit more pricey, the niche market for bluegrass instruments and practicaly the complete lack of other mandolinists being interested in a typical bluegrass instrument for their classical, jazz or other music calls for a lower price.

I recently repaired an instrument damaged during shipping. The carrier assumed no responsibility.

Monte's sure are nice but for this guy not 50K nice! I'd rather take that $ and get an old prewar Fern or 40's D-28 Bone! Investment wise you can't go wrong with the proven true vintage desirable instruments! Just my personal preference if I was to spend 50K and I have and much more on instruments. 20-25k would be the price I would pay if I wanted say a Monte, Gil, Nugget etc.! Same with a good friend of mine-He's spent a small fortune on I think he has 3 now "Wayne Henderson D-28's" in old growth Brazilian, for the price of those he could've had say a 1934-37 Martin D-28 Bone? I know I'd go with the vintage 28's but thats just me with my thought process. It all goes with what really wants to have IMHO. God Bless

I tend to agree with William Smith -I have a hand made mandolin made by Dick Knight in 1982- I believe his last example. It is a fact of life that certain makers' mandolins and very specific models will always be great investment opportunities and their prices will remain high and probably only get higher. On that basis, paying out stupendous sums on other instruments not made by this inner circle will not be rewarded in the same way. I know this is the case with my Knight because what I paid for it in 1982 could have gone into a late 50s Strat or Les Paul with money to spare and the values of those would be stratospheric now. Still, it was what I wanted at the time and that was what mattered.

Stratocaster/stratosphere. Actually how it was named in ‘54.
