Oh man, another great is gone. I clearly remember the first time I heard "Bounce Away" over the air waves from Dover Delaware (I was in Cape may NJ), it knocked my socks off. I had not heard anyone play so cleanly at speed before.
RIP Herschel.

So sad. He was a one of a kind. I always loved his music. You could tell it was him playing on a recording without even looking at the liner notes.
RIP Herschel.
I had the good fortune to know Herschel for the last 15 years or so, and he was a class guy, a great mandolin player, and a great storyteller. He seemed to know every bluegrass musician who ever stepped onto a stage. I always enjoyed visiting with him and hearing him play one of his fine mandolins. My heart goes out to his wife Joyce and his kids. RIP Herschel.
Rest in peace. A real genius of the mandolin.

Oh man, so sad. He was definitely underrated, in my opinion. Rest In Peace.

Bounce Away was never on cd that I am aware of. The recording can be found on Amazon. Rest In Peace, Herschel—and than you for the great music.

Rest in peace Herschel.
Just found this vid, such a pretty tune. Good times.
I’d love to learn the tune.
Anyone want to share the .abc?

Bounce Away certainly was the perfect title. Herschel's playing had an infectious bounce to it. Such a master. Never got to see him, but I had that cassette. RIP

Rebecca is my favorite.

He is a player that caught my attention early on in my mandolin life mostly because of his distinctive name...then I heard him and he became a hero
too many strings
RIP. My favorite player. In his own style is a great instructional video
Rest well and enjoy the Jam above.

Such sad news, my condolences to his family and friends. Herschel was in Christopher Henry’s Monroe wks last NY Eve, its available at Chris’ YT page.
Also, the DVD instructional video has Rebecca on it, I fell in love with the tune the first time I heard it - it’s the ringtone on my phone.

One of the highlights of my early mandolin days was seeing and meeting him at The Mandolin Symposium. Rebecca must have been played 10000 times that week and everyone of them was great.
One of the true greats and such a kind man.

I just had a gig last weekend (second since I moved to Seattle!!) and had to learn Rebecca song for the show which has been a song that fell into the "songs I should know but don't" category for too long. I just learned it for that show and really just started listening to Herschel recently in the process. I'm sad it took me so long! The last two jams I went to after he passed, I made sure to call Rebecca in his memory.
Really sad but seems like he led a very full life, played with some amazing people, and left a significant impact on bluegrass.

Like others I met Herschel at the Mandolin Symposium and did a workshop or two with him, in part because I knew he was an important part of bluegrass
music.
