Gift of Summer
Dear mandolin friends around the world,
Before we break for the summer, one final, musical gift. My esteemed friend, Dutch mandolinist and pedagogue Alex Timmerman did me the honor of performing and posting my Carillon Variations on YouTube. I share the video with you in the hope that you will enjoy it as much as I have.
The source material that this little piece is based on is indisputably lovely, one of the finest, sweetest traditional melodies ever sung. All I have added is the merry jingle-jangle of the carillon, a sonority that our beloved mandolin captures better than any other instrument in my opinion.

This, like all my works for unaccompanied mandolin, is available as a free download at

This work is more about sonority than about virtuosity; if you can hear a myriad little bells chiming, that's the whole intention of the composition.
I wish you all a happy, healthy, and enjoyable summer.
Victor
