Thanks. I've checked the site from top to bottom. They're not explicit about any coating other than saying "cured with moonshine", so maybe more of a treated string than a plastic film coated (like Elixirs are)?

I thought THESE were the coated strings & the ones you showed were just regular.

They have a different core, but have the same treatment as the ones I posted. A lot of people prefer this to the plastic coated approach. Feels more like a regular string.

I am not clear if the strings are coated with moonshine of if the employees are getting sauced while making the strings

The moonshine is code for their coating. I'm not sure if the unwound strings are coated or not though.

I think you're right Bazz. I don't think "coated" is the same as "cured." I've been using a set of Mapes 80/20's for the past month or so and I don't think there's another material coating the string. I have some Octacotres in waiting, but to my understanding the main difference between those and most other strings is the eight sided core wire. So far though I do really like the Mapes 80/20's.

I've emailed Mapes for some clarification. I'll report back!

Perfect analogy. I never was a Tab drinker but I lived through the New Coke debacle in the 80's.

I based my post on a previous email to them.

Okay, hopefully this settles the Mapes debate...

I emailed to ask if their mandolin strings were coated or treated:

I'm not sure if it will settle it permanently. Other cafe members have received replies from Mapes staff that contradict this one...
