Thread: Favorite stand?

  1. #1

    Default Favorite stand?

I have been using a little A-frame stand for my mando, but it doesn't feel solid enough to really keep it safe. So I wanted to ask y'all:

What's your favorite mandolin stand and/or hanger?

Cooperstand - here at Sweetwater, but sold by many: https://www.sweetwater.com/store/det...stand-pro-mini

I bet one of these would work pretty well, too: https://www.sweetwater.com/store/det...-ukulele-stand
It works fine for ukes of various sizes.

I was looking at the second one earlier today, I have a very similar stand for my guitar that I really like. I may go for that one, or maybe for the one from the same brand that clamps to a shelf or table.

I like the Ingles SA-20 Violin Stand. It adjusts nicely and has a bar you can flip over to keep the neck in place. You can get one at Sweetwater:

I've been using the same stand for close to 40 years. I got it when stationed in Germany in the 80s. It's a double hanger with bumpers to keep your instrument from banging against the metal of the stand. Had to have some parts re-welded a few years ago and the rubber on the hanger arms and bumpers has been replaced at least twice.
Have never found anything I like better or is more useful.

I have an older Ultimate GS1000 I bought for a tele. The yoke has a tight enough crook in it that is holds mandolins very well. I glued a medium density foam strip to the down tube where the back of the mando hits it. It's nice having the mando up at the same height as guitars that are on stands. It's fine for home and jams.

If I was doing much stage work I'd definitely use a Hercules, I have them for my acoustics and they're rock solid. It's impossible to accidentally knock an instrument off a Hercules. When said instrument $3k+ I'll take solid/safe over pretty.

I use the Allwood stand (red oak) as well. A little nicer than a metal stand and holds multiple instruments including my u-bass

I have one of these, made from two pieces of flat wood fitted together with slots. It fits my mandolins, which sit solidly on it. The stand can easily can be taken apart, then you have two flat pieces of wood that can be thrown into a drawer or gig back pocket. It won't protect your mandolin from rambunctious pets and children or clumsy friends though.

At home I hang all my instruments (fiddles, ukes, the mandolin family, guitars) on padded adjustable hangers screws into cedar stringers spax-screwed into studs. I don't remember the brand.

Each case has a Cooperstand in it for when I play out.

I usually keep my instruments in their cases when not in use but will sometimes leave some out on a Hercules 3 instrument stand, which I also used a lot when more active with our church praise band, with which I usually played multiple instruments depending on the songs and who could make it, not the most elegant design, but stable, sturdy, durable, and affordable. Folds up slenderly enough to fit behind a chair in a corner when not in use.

Iím going to eventually build a case rack out of some salvaged barn wood I have but havenít gotten around to it. Lots of pretty and functional options listed above as well.

I think I'm gonna go for the Hercules "ukulele" stand, I love my Hercules hanging guitar stand, so I think I'll like that one too.

I like my Hercules stand, too. With 3 large shepherds, a Chi/Terrier mix that thinks she's a shepherd and a rambunctious cat, it provides a greater comfort level when I need to free up my hands in between practicing/playing. It's good and stable to avoid accidental (and expensive) mishaps outside of the cases. The neck-lock is a great feature, too. When I'm through playing, my instruments stay safely stored away in their cases.

a few years ago, I walked into the local music store and asked for a Mando stand. Clerk pulled on out and said, "Used. Twenty dollars."

I asked what that crooked thing was sticking out of the top. It slid up and down. He had no idea. We thought maybe it was a hat rack. After all, every self-respecting mando player has a hat.

Anyhow, the stand was stable and solid and in good condition, so I bought it.

A couple of years later, I was visiting a friend. We went into her music room and I saw the same stand, with her fiddle on it. The crooked thing, pulled up, was a bow hook. (But I still use mine for hats.)

So: Get a fiddle stand. They're great.

Hercules for me too. I use the triple stand. Not much vibe but safe and rock solid and can accommodate a Bouzouki, mandola, and mandolin.
