Yay on the strap button but as much as I'd love a button on the heel, I will never drill my gibby when a sting over the head would work.

....... and helps keep over-sized trousers up.
How many times has the “strap button or nay” topic been discussed?
Having drilled older wood for various construction projects (but never my mandolins,) I have to say older wood splits MUCH easier than new wood, and I would not be willing to take the risk. I use alternatives (tying to the headstock) on my mandolins.
You don't need a strap button on an ' F ' style mandolin.

Oh, it's a fact, for sure. It's a truism, in fact. But it's beside the point. Nothing at all to do with the OP.
Perhaps you, too, need to take a quick glance at it. Or Post #46.
This late in the game, people often respond to the thread title without looking at the OP or reading subsequent posts.

The same is true of you. Why you took it upon yourself to browbeat me about a well-intentioned post crafted with humor that had nothing to do with you is baffling. It's also baffling why you've insisted on engaging in ad hominem badgering rather than addressing the issue raised. I'll repeat: Reading the OP would have answered the question before it could be asked.
So before this thread gets locked down, I'll say again: It's a good idea to read at least the OP before posting in a thread.
And to all surfing by: I'm sorry you have to see all this. I composed a post with humor and good intentions, and never imagined it would be so badly misinterpreted.

For what it’s worth,
I liked the limerick! Again, nice little bit of wprdsmithing there JB
I have had to go back and read original posts more than once when composing a response. There have been more than a few times that threads have gone completely “Crazy Train” and ended up way off the rails.

Personally I wouldn't add a strap button to any mandolin. No matter where you put it - in addition to the comments about poor installations and etc, the mandolin is generally "off balance" when a strap is connected at the body only (i.e. at the tail and near where the neck meets the body).
Like others said, I would just put it on the headstock. I do this for my F Style too - primarily due to balance. When the strap connects to the top of the headstock and the bottom tail - you don't have to do anything to hold the mandolin at playing level. This can help increase speed and allow for a "lighter touch" on the left hand among other things. All my mandolins are set like this - and no, I have no tuning issues whatsoever.

NAY! it has been that way for almost 100 years! why change that now?
When I got my '17 A1 it had a leather shoestring tied to the headstock.. works great and it is still there (no idea how long ago it was tied).
Nope, thread the strap under the strings just above the nut.

Honestly, I barely use the strap at all. When playing, I tend to support the instrument by cradling the neck in the crook of my left hand and by resting the heel of my right hand on the bridge. It's like it floats there at playing level. I got to thinking about all this when I started playing out again - the strap does hardly any work at all. It's there mostly as a safety net, in case my high-wire act goes awry.
And no, this doesn't affect my playing ability (such as it is) nor the sound, as far as I can tell. And for goodness' sake, the blessed thing only weighs, what, two pounds, if that? It's not a burden, like, say, a banjo - in terms of weight and sound.

i'm still a firm "no", but if you must ignore good advice, at least consider something tasteful. Kluson makes one that's classy and graceful. It's a little smaller so you may not need to enlarge the slot/hole in a good quality strap (far too many fine straps have been ruined by over-enlarging the holes). i've been thru a few in the endpin and am tickled pink with the black Kluson.
