Did changing the tailpiece lead to a noticeable difference in sound? Thanks
I also changed from the phosphor bronze strings it shipped with to some D'addario monels, so there was a little bit of difference in tone but I would attribute that more to the strings. In the past, I had changed a tailpiece on another mandolin from a cast one piece to the abbreviated Nugget/Northfield design and did not feel it was noticeable. On this mandolin, these two were only about 2 grams difference in weight, so even if you believe the argument that a change in mass would change the tone, it was a very minor change.

I purchased one new from the Mandolin Store end of 2022, same model, Blonde and Engelmann spruce top and added the Tone Gard as well. I agree with everything you say- it has a beautiful mellow sound, a bit darker than Adirondack, but that's what I was looking for. I use it for strumming and singing as well, which I find is similar to using an oval hole (also have a Morris oval hole 2 point that I like).
FYI, I've played the Northfield 4th Gen and thought it was beautiful.
Enjoy and I'd love to hear videos if you get a chance.

Drew -- Love it-- one of the best-looking mandolins around! The amber is gorgeous. The thing is, those Northfields play and sound fantastic. Enjoy!
Michael, if that had a red spruce top I think you would be in trouble.

Since this thread came back to life I will chime back in and say that I am still loving my amber F5S! It is the Engelmann and I really like having the contrast between it and my red spruce 4th Gen. I lean towards the 4th Gen for jams and things where I want to make sure I am cutting through with volume, but the tone of the F5S is really sweet. It's not quiet by any means, just not as "cutting" if that makes sense.
I did use it on a trio gig last weekend with just guitar and fiddle and that seemed to work really well.

The blonde F2 oval hole is a majestic instrument. 😉
