Thread: Any online Newgrass Teachers/Courses?

    Default Any online Newgrass Teachers/Courses?

I’ve been taking Sierra Hull’s class at artstworks, and have tried a few other bluegrass beginner courses. However, the classic fiddle tunes are getting boring. I am most interested in progressive bluegrass, like Chris Thile, Sierra Hull, etc. Does anyone know of classes or resources for learning progressive bluegrass music?

You might want to take a look at Peghead Nation's courses taught by Joe K. Walsh. I've been subscribed to The Advancing Mandolinist for a while now, and it's been best investment I've made in mando education. Joe teaches tunes by Grisman, Thile, Matt Flinner, Mike Marshall, Sam Bush, Bela Fleck, Tim O'Brien, Darryl Anger, as well as lots of swing and jazz tunes. He's a professional educator, so his teaching style is very clear and focused on fundamental techniques, but also dives into theory as a tool to use in improvisation.

Mike Marshall's course at AW (which I'm soon to start my 2nd year on) does focus on fiddle tunes as a starting point; but (as he's probably been doing this over 10 years at that site now), his course covers classical, "dawg" music, choro, swing, and anything you want to toss his way. There are lots of submissions and feedback given on just about anywhere you want to go. I don't know if you can actually switch instructors there - probably not - but if you have a short plan and like the format, you might look into his course.

(Me, I stuck my toe in the classical stuff because I can "read" and improv is hard, but I know I have to, first, actually get decent at something, so the bluegrass/fiddle-tune stuff will keep me heading to the woodshed for the rest of my days, I expect )

Matt Flinner has an 8 week class starting on New Acoustic Music that might interest you. Here's the info on his website. Some cool tunes and Matt prepares exercises and technical studies for the tunes that really help your playing. Highly recommended.

Not to toot my own horn (partly because all the people listed above are incredible educators) but I am starting to go through Chris Thile's catalog of songs on my Patreon. I'll be posting a decent amount of his songs as sheet music/tab and then hopefully making some tutorial videos as well.
