Thread: Lyre Mandolin- S S Stewart- Martin?

Default Lyre Mandolin- S S Stewart- Martin?

I know that S S Stewart branded mandolins were made by Martin. I seem to recall the Ditson branded mandolins had the brand impressed on the back of the headstock in the Martin fashion. I am not sure as for the S S Stewart mandolins. Anyway, it does have a vague Martin look to it but I am sure others will have a more informed view.

The styling appears to be Martin-like but the fit and finish looks a little suspect to me. I would expect to see clay dot finger board markings or markers other than round on the fretboard and unless the bridge is misplaced it should be above the cant. I guess anything is possible but honestly it lacks the delicacy of a Martin in my eyes. I do however have a well worn eraser on my pencil.

I'm not sure that Martin made all SS Stewart branded mandolins.

Yes, I agree- it is Martin-ish but seems to lack the finish quality one might expect as you have mentioned. I did a short search for any others but failed to find one as it is possible there is some more information available on them- but perhaps, not.

Whoever made it, probably made this mandolin. I found another with a cloud tailpiece, so I think the one on this mandolin is a replacement and the photos are small but it looks to be a decent quality mandolin:
