I probably should have mentioned it’s primarily solo mandolin songs. Just simple melodies and light improvisation. The goal is to create enough of that music to go into a local studio to get better, cleaner recordings. :-)

Thanks for sharing. What kind of mic / recording setup are you using?

Hey, thanks for the question Mingus. :-)

It’s just a iPhone SE microphone into a voice memo. Getting the songs on YouTube was a challenge. I had to save the memos to DropBox, upload them ti iMovie, download them to my phone, and then upload them to YouTube. It took a while because there were so many.

    Glad you checked them out!

Thanks everyone. I appreciate you checking it out, and Zach my local friends seem to like December Mind too. It's quite simple but there's something mathematical about it, so it feels like it has some logic.

Generally speaking, I feel there is a place for learning and/or writing new and challenging material and there is a place for playing more directly from the heart. These songs are directly from the heart, just exploring basic motifs and enjoying an emotional connection with the tone of the instruments. They often start with an idea and then are improvised.

They are in sequential order too. That is notable because back when I recorded the first song I was mired in substance abuse. I don't remember recording the first song and I can hear the brain fog, confusion, and honestly the delusion in the music. It's less organized, less purposeful. At the time I thought my playing was better because of what I was up to chemically, even that I needed to be in that space to do my best. I was wrong though and it's a lesson to share. We have the best access to our abilities and are most connected when we are sober. Comparing that first song, "Love in G," to the later songs from "December Mind" onward is evidence.

Life sure is great when things are clear. :-)
