    Default Standing issues

I’m starting to practice standing up as I’m going to be playing with some new people standing.
I actually like standing, I find the shoulders drop nice and loose.
Trouble is the instrument slides round to my right. If I adjust my right hand to suit it just goes further round. Im 6ft, average male build (if that’s relevant). Eastman 504 and a Celtic style octave mando.
It’s not so bad in short sleeves as the skin contact on my forearm helps pin it down.

    Am I the only one???

Which shoulder is your strap over? Where on the mando does the strap connect?

To stop it sliding, you can install a strapbutton on the knee but the head will become a bit more unstable. You can also place one of these sticky rubber mats for car dashboards on the back, that helps a lot as well.

I have it on a banjolele and if i looses stickyness you can wash it with dish washing liquid.

I wear it like a guitar - tail piece button, round the back of the neck and over to the headstock where it’s tied around under the strings between the nut and the tuners.

My two flat tops do the same thing. I think it happens with them and not so much with my F style or A style (strap attached under the elevated fretboard) because of how the strap attaches to the peghead. I two wear my strap like a guitar player would.

My advice is to keep practicing, getting used to using your forearm pressing lightly to the top to add stability.

I remember this being a big issue for me when I started playing at jams and in public, and I think that a lot of it was to do with just having spent too much time practicing sitting down and holding the mandolin very differently from how I did when I stood up. Ultimately the answer is just to spend a lot of time doing it until you learn to compensate, how to be comfortable in that position, and keep the mandolin steady while you play standing up. It takes a lot of patience.

Thanks for your responses. A few days in, The octave mando is going well, I have put lower, on the hip so it’s not rotating around my stomach.
The regular mando though will take a bit more time.as it’s lighter and less stable

I don’t generally use a strap and practice standing without it when I do I noticed my arm rides lower on the mandolin. Almost straight across the tailpiece if not a little lower sometimes. I don’t know if that’s good or not but it works for me.
