    Default New/old Mandriola.

I am running into one strange instrument after the other.
I bought a mandolin, found a mandola and was offered an amazing deal on his octave mandolin as well.
I bought a banjo mandolin but sold it, as I didn't like it. I suddenly found and bought a guitarshaped mandolin, a mandolinetto.
3 pocketmandolins also found my way.
I then found a 10 string ukulele, a Martin Tiple T-15, then a Taropatch ukulele(8 string in unison), then a straight 8 string ukulele(2 pairs with one octave higher), then a Flight Sophia ukulele, with built in electronic reverb and delay and today my mandolin search found a 12 string mandolin?!
I just bought it and found out it's another instrument I've never heard of before: A mandriola !!

Now I'll have to wait until my son picks it up and he comes to visit in a month or two but then I'll learn to play: "Isn't she lovely"

    Does anybody know her?

I've never before seen a scratch plate with a person's portrait on it.

Neither have I and not on the back either, until I saw(and bought) this. Now I'm looking for the other mandolinetto with the other girl on it :-)

Yes, called mandriola in Europe and in the US called (sadly) just a 12 string mandolin. Lots of those were made in the US by Oscar Schmidt and I have seen some by other US makers/distributors: Lyon & Healy, Bruno, and, one many years ago by Gibson. There are a few makers in Europe who made these as well: Garozzo, and some German makers, to start. I guess it was another attempt to increase the volume of the instrumen by triple-stringing each course. If I had one (I don't!) I would string it with octave strings in the two lower courses for a real racket. This will be a bear to keep in tune. Have a great time. My throw-away guess is that it was built by a maker in Catania, Sicily. Hey, what does the back look like? Rosewood or maple or both? And I assume there is no label inside?

Funny... I was looking through my files and I found this list I compiled. Probably not complete.

    12 string Mandolin Makers

    Stewart & Bauer Philadelphia
    Gibson Kalamazoo
    D’Angelico New York
    Garozza - Catania
    Grimaldi Catania, Italy
    Harwood St. Louis/New York
    Hozapfel Germany
    Pagani New York
    Ricordi Napoli
    Stridente Napoli
    William Wicht - Cleveland
    Oscar Schmidt - New Jersey
    Bruno - New York
    Levin- Sweden
    Lyon & Healy - Chicago
    Hawes, CC - Portland ME
    Menzenhauer - Germany
    Otwin - Germany
    F. Schwarzer - St Louis

I have no idea. My son is picking it up and I'll get it in 1 or 2 months time.

Looks like rosewood and from what I can tell just some scratches on the back and hopefully no major separations or need for major repairs.

Yes the back looks ok but there are defects. Many MOP inserts on the edge are missing, the scratchplate is lifting and on the right
lower side the top is lifting.
