My favorite florentine mandolins are the ones cooked on a bed of spinach.

In my experience, when served that way, they can be delicious - although, in all fairness, most of the flavor and nutrition comes from the spinach. The mandolins themselves are very low in protein, much too high in fiber, and however a chef may fret over them, they are always way too stringy. But everyone's taste is different ...

Apologies if I struck a collective nerve, it would seem I didn't do my research of past discussions on the topic well enough. Though I appreciate all the replies and the sense of humor.

Well, you know us. Always on the ready to mix up some fact-finding and fun. But I think we actually might have broken some new ground this time around - just a bit. And it's not over yet. The Gibson Gumshoes are still pounding the pavement trying to turn up more hidden clues, working on solving the eternal mystery.

No need to apologize, this comes up every now and again. It's generally entertaining.

This is pretty much how my A model got named. After a gig, I was fielding questions from an audience member while packing up. He asked me, "What do you call your instrument?" Not "What kind of instrument is that?" or "Is that a ukulele?" - what do I call it? Apparently, I said, "Molly," and rather tersely, delivery and timing being important in comedy. I'm sure I corrected my manners, and explained it was a mandolin, as furthering mandolin consciousness is my prime directive, and also, I do try to be courteous. It's likely I would have forgotten all about this, but the pedal steel player came up after the guy left and said he just about fell over laughing over what he'd overheard. I was just using alliteration - and any name starting with "M" would have done - but that's what I said, and the name stuck. It's a good old school name, which suits the instrument, and the player.

My mandola’s name is Nelson. Nobody so far thinks it’s cute.

I think it's cute, even charming: Nelson Mandola. But then, who cares what I think?

Wait a minute - geography. Hadn't really thought of that. Not states, but cities. And Gibson started out in Michigan, so these could stand for ... Ann Arbor and Flint. Of course, there's also Holland and, of course, Kalamazoo. And Upper Peninsula.
