Default Big River - chord sheet and tabs / notation for solo

Lately I've been writing out solos more often for students. I recently wrote up one for Big River using the Grateful Dead versions of the song rather than Johnny Cash (the main difference is the Dead do it in A vs Cash doing it in F; though the lyrics are actually pretty different too).

Anyway, I figured since these are part of my free lessons that I would share it here. The breakdown provides a few points that I think help beginners and some intermediates.

The solo tab and standard notation is at the bottom of the page. It has two different solos, one simple and one more complex. I hope you all enjoy

By way of street-cred, I am a veteran of many, many Dead shows and have a personal library of over 1,000 shows. If you want a super-good version of Big River listen to 8/13/1975 from The Great American Music Hall. This was a retirement show when the dead were on temporary hiatus and well-rested. The entire show sparkles with energy and includes a rare and totally skip-able Blues for Allah complete with crickets. The show was officially released as Two From the Vault about 20 years ago.

I have covered many Dead tunes on my YouTube channel - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCdf...b6jzzlQA_Ph_qw

    Happy picking, Sam

Nice man! I just listened to your Half Step recording. It's a great tune - I like your fills and cross picking at the end of the solo too

    Thanks!

My MAS obsession ended when I got that 2005 MT2V... a very sweet mandolin that never gets in my way and always makes me sound better than I really am (sort of like a good wife).
