Thread: Alternative to Tone-Gard for a Gold Tone Octave Mandolin

Default Alternative to Tone-Gard for a Gold Tone Octave Mandolin

I have a Tone-Gard on my old Flatiron army/navy style mando and want to put one on my Gold Tone OM-800+. I contacted Tone-Gard and they said their unit for an OM won't fit the Gold Tone OM. Since Tone-Gard is no longer taking custom orders, I was wondering if any of you all might have a suggestion for an alternative to a Tone-Gard.

    Thanks,

    Craig

Have you determined that a Tone-Gard is necessary for your OM? I have one on my mandolin but never thought I needed one on my Weber OM, because the body is so much larger and not as much in contact with my belly when I'm playing it. You don't see Tone-Gards on other larger instruments like guitars either. I tend to think of it as a mandolin-specific item, but your mileage may vary.

I think this depends on who you're around. In circles I jam with, I see a number of these on guitars.

To the OP though, have you submitted your Gold Tone OM's dimensions to anyone for verification? I'm guessing yes, but just wanted to check... I think someone else in MC asked this a few weeks ago, and one answer for their particular instrument was actually using a standard mandolin ToneGard.

Also, there are a few people who have developed one-off alternatives for their instruments that do the same thing as the ToneGard. Is this something you feel like trying yourself?
