Thread: mountable pickup - where ?

  1. #1

Default mountable pickup - where ?

So my housemate got me a little cheap pickup for Christmas ☃️🎄 and I do not really know where to put it...I've only ever seen Sierra Hull have one kind of kitty-corner from her bridge. Does it matter where I stick it?

It may differ slightly on your Mandolin but generally this is the best placement I've found for my Weber. On my flat tops it doesn't seem to matter as much. Test out a number of spots, eventually you'll find the one that sounds best!

I mounted mine as Zach shows. Worked well. I went to internal because I got annoyed by the clamp-on mount for the cord. I kept stepping on the cord and pulling the assembly off.

A: you can try a number of locations and see which part of the top gives you the sound you prefer.

Behind the bridge under the strings, as in Zach's photo is also my choice, but next to the bass rather than the treble strings. "Hiding" the pickup under the strings means there is no danger of hitting it with your hand, sleeve or whatever, which, though it sounds interesting is usually unintentional and seldom appropriate.

Question Re: mountable pickup - where ?

That is where my old Schertler went on my Lebeda right behind the bridge, under the strings ..

But, I cannot make a Declaration as to what's right for your mandolin, sight unseen (or heard) ..

My Mix A5 , Peter put the installed version, right under the treble end of the bridge base's foot.

You may have to make up your own mind, as I said, by experimentation..

I am so bad about responses...smh. I took your advice and mounted mine in the same place exactly almost. Due to the nature of the pickup (it is piezoelectric ) it does not work so well. That may have to do with my choice of material I mounted it with (sticky tack, as to avoid damage to the finish) rather than the pickup itself. I do not know, but I say thank you all the same.

Bear in mind that it’s not entirely down to where you stick it or what you stick it with. What you plug it into will have a major influence on how well it works.
