Default Latest Barn Cat Mandolins Flat-Top Build

Here is my latest mandolin build. I just strung it up this afternoon. I'll let it sit a few days before doing my setup.

It is my Barn Cat Mandolins 'Moggy' model. 13.5" scale length with a slightly larger body than my earliest builds. Top and back have a 15' radius induced arch. Top is Adirondack Spruce. Back, ribs and neck are Red Maple. As usual, Old Standard Tonewoods provided me with gorgeous wood. It has a Schatten pickup built in with an end pin jack.

More pictures and probably some sound files to follow.

    Best wishes, Bob

Not knowing Adirondack Spruce I wonder if that is it's natural colour or has it been dyed?

    Hi Poul,

It didn't start out looking anything like this. I make up my stains using TransTint dyes and alcohol. This one was stained using a combination of TransTint's Orange, Reddish Brown and Dark Walnut. The spruce and the maple received this stain, but to differing degrees. I sealed with 1/2 lb cut shellac, steel-wooled, then stained prior to finishing the instrument.

    Best wishes,

    Bob
