Thread: Dunlop Nickel Wound Strings

    Default Dunlop Nickel Wound Strings

I was trying to find some Dunlop strings and notice that they are no longer available under the old packaging. Did Dunlop just rebrand their strings as Americana?

I thought Dunlop made motorbike tires.

Some company called Amazon sells them

I've been to the Amazon site. I'm not saying that Dunlop mando strings aren't available. But the packaging has changed. Have the strings changed or has only the presentation changed?

I can't really speak for everyone here but Dunlop strings aren't talked about a lot on at the Cafe and certainly not as popularas other brands. I've never tried them but am curious about them. Are they any good?

I have a Dunlop string winder!

I suspect they’re nothing to do with the inventor of the pneumatic tyre but the name Jim Dunlop comes to mind - wasn’t there a capo with his name on it back in the day?

If I were a betting person, I would bet that Dunlop strings are made by another string company and my guess would be D'Addario judging by the gauges in a set. Just a guess.

The strings in England are the newly packaged strings. Those are available in the US. I was exposed to the Dunlop nickel strings by mandolinist Chad Fadley, a talented mandolin player from Montana. The strings are very similar to Daddario Silk and Steel, in sound, but they seem to last a little longer.

I haven't been in the business side of things for years, but there used to be only two big string factories in the US (GHS and Daddario), making most of the other brands (but not all).

Question Re: Dunlop Nickel Wound Strings

UK? I had Nickel wound Newtones in the case when I bought my Hodson D'jangolin. probably what he fitted.

I think Mapes dominates the music wire business every one else may reprocess that .
get Bronze & Nickle alloy wire elsewhere the actual winding machines are not that big. but they may have a big room full of them..

ever visited a string making company?

Mapes Strings & Mount Joy Wire are two of the very small number of manufacturers of music wire.
