Thread: 1920s Harmony Shutt Style Mandolin

Default 1920s Harmony Shutt Style Mandolin

Sold as a Sterling which I seem to remember was a Tonk Bros brand. This seller likes to identify instruments as Regal made- he has a parlour guitar for sale described as such but they are both Harmony made. This looks at a quick glance to be quite a nice instrument but it is probably overpriced.

There are members who might be able to confirm if it is a Shutt product. Certainly, a higher quality instrument. I have never seen a bridge like that before and it may well be original to the instrument.

Love the pick-guard cutout on these. Makes sense, right? Might be another unsung Shutt innovation ...

That's a similar - almost certainly Harmony made - example of the Shutt design. It's been stripped and has an amateur refinish, and non-original bridge. An amateur neck reset (with a pin added through the back) A surprisingly 'close to fitting', much later, tweed hardshell case.

And yes, the pickguard shape, following the contour of the f-hole is a Shutt innovation. Patented, (I think) along with a means of attaching pick guards (not used here), and a bridge design that allowed for intonation adjustment.
