Default Happy birthday to me - My new Pomeroy #274

After several years playing my Dad's old Gibson A-40, I decided it was finally time to have a mandolin made for me. Coincidentally, it arrived just a few days before my birthday!

I play bluegrass but am becoming more and more interested in other genres (classical, Irish, jazz) and wanted something with a warmer, fuller sound. I also don't play very fast and so greater sustain was high on the list of priorities. In addition, while I love the Gibson and I would never sell it, the C-shaped neck and nut width were not ideal for my left hand.

After searching around for a while I read about Don Paine at Pomeroy Instruments and immediately knew that he was producing mandolins with the sound I was looking for in his violin-style instruments. Don was great to work with and not only did I get the mandolin of my dreams, I also received a first class education in mandolin construction!

So here is my beautiful new violin-style mandolin, made with walnut back and sides and a red spruce top, and (new for me) a radius fretboard. Don suggested trying flat wound strings and he was right. The sound is incredible. It sustains for days. Hopefully I will get it together to post an audio file soon, but in the meantime here are some pictures of Pomeroy #274.

Looks really nice! Since sustain is a high priority for you, walnut instead of maple was a good call.

    Enjoy!

Absolutely gorgeous mandolin and I just fell down a rabbit hole and spent a good while on the Pomeroy website and it was so interesting. The violin style with the walnut is just stunning! Happy birthday and enjoy that mandolin for years to come!

Thank you all. When Don was going through the walnut he had on hand, he found this one-piece back in his inventory. I know it would have sounded just as great with a two-piece back, but as soon as I saw it, I knew I had to have it!

I keep alternating between playing it and just sitting here looking at it, it's so beautiful.

Congratulations! I've been enjoying #268 outfitted pretty similarly. Don strung up my Thomastik stark strings. It's a true joy to play -- lots of sustain, lots of resonance, lightweight, very easy to play, and it stays in tune for days. I echo your positive experiences working with Don. Enjoy!

Congrats! and welcome to the Pomeroy family. Happy owner of #264, his plain oval A model. Love that violin style and the walnut back is gorgeous on yours. Enjoy!

I've got Pomeroy F5 #39, and it is a killer mando...bluegrass, old time, celtic - it does it all. Can't say enough good things about it.

I play Irish and old time on my Pomeroy oval and love how it sounds. But I've played it in a bluegrass jam in a pinch and it performed well. Enjoy your beautiful mandolin!
