Thread: Local instructor - Rochester NY ?

  1. #1

Default Local instructor - Rochester NY ?

I am new to mandolin and live in Rochester Ny, I have asked around at some
of the local guitar shops and cannot seem to find information on any one
teaching mandolin locally. If anyone new of some one in my area a heads up would be great.
    Thanks

Try asking at Bernunzio's (downtown) or Stutzman's (Ridge Rd.).

There is a Western New York old time and bluegrass association jam (they have a facebook page) at the Bennington Lanes, in Bennington, on the 2nd Tuesday of every month, 2:00 - ??. There are a few folks from Rochester area that show up there playing Mandolin. Some would be worth learning from. Stop by and say hi!!
You could also PM me for more info.

You might also lookup Ken Luk: Aside from the classical guitar, Ken cofounded the Rochester Mandolin Orchestra in February 2019 and organizes monthly meetings for mandolinists and guitarists of the Greater Rochester Area.

And you might try sending a PM to Cafe member allenhopkins who is in Rochester.

Weighing in: my good friend Bob Olyslager (Blue Ridge Country Ramblers, Group Therapy) has been teaching mandolin and banjo at his house for decades, on the east side of Rochester. PM me and I'll give you his phone number. His areas of concentration are bluegrass and Celtic/American fiddle tunes.

I teach mandolin at the Hochstein School -- just got done with a class -- but strictly beginner: scales, simple tunes, elementary techniques. Bob's back to teaching after a pandemic hiatus; you'd need to be vaccinated, for sure.

Tom Napoli has also been an organizing force behind the mandolin orchestra here. Doesn't teach, that I know of.
