    Default Desk clamp hanger?

I recently moved into a new place and have been setting up my desk/"studio" area. I thought it'd be really neat to have some kind of clamp hanger so I could hang my mandolins off my desk for quick access. Does such a device exist? Can you suggest any low footprint alternatives that don't involve drilling holes in walls?

Had one for years and they’re readily available in the UK - try googling “Pub Prop”.

They work well on tables/desktops with square edges but some pubs in the UK can have fancy tables with bevelled edges and they can slip off.

Hi Diego - In the photo below, you can see my quick and dirty solution to having a mandolin at hand for when I’m sitting at my kitchen table (like right now). I’ve been meaning to change it so it’s hanging from the kitchen table itself, an old mission style oak desk, but have yet to get around to doing so. Because of earthquake issues in my part of the world, my kitchen mando is either an older Harmony Monterey, or, as here, a non-pristine Gibson A50 I picked up in a local pawn shop a few years back.

Thanks, I hadn't heard of this. Have you found you can hang an acoustic mandolin from it with no problem? ...I also have a feeling my electric may be too heavy for it, but I can always just get one and test it.

Heh, this is neat and rather creative, although I don't have handles like this around my desk. Thanks for sharing!

Looking at the wall hanging block adaptation . a trip to the hardware store for some aluminum flat bar
drilled for some screws and bent into a hook, It could then hang over a slightly open drawer ..

You could use the d'addario guitar dock, although it's for standing. I have one at my computer table with a peice of rug under it.

I heated the "arms" and bent them to hold a mandolin neck.

Will clamp on horizontal- and vertical structures.

I don’t see why they shouldn’t hold an electric mandolin providing you sufficiently wang up the screw beneath the table. I suppose they’re really intended for guitars where the base is on the floor and the instrument simply leans onto the “prop”.

I use a Pub Prop regularly in local sessions and it can accommodate a fiddle or mandolin as well as the guitar. It comes with fittings to hold the fiddle bow too. I have not had a problem with it over the years I have had it.

They do make ones that clip onto mic stands, so maybe that.

The Pub Prop isn't solid enough to support a heavy instrument.

Mine certainly is but, looking at their farcetube page, the design does seem to have changed over the years.

My Pub Prop takes my octave regularly over the past several years; the octave hangs from the holder, not touching the floor, while ny guitar does sit on the floor with the nck held by the Pub Prop. The locking bar on the front of the holder gives a greater feeling of safety than the one pictured for mic stands which has no securing bar to hold the instrument.

Which version do you have John? I bought mine from the chap that originally produced them (probably 10/15 years ago) but I was aware that he had an alternative design available even then.

The one I have has a separate swinging arm to lock the intsrument in but the current version appears to be made of a flexible material which simply bends out of the way to allow an instrument neck to be inserted. I can speak for the suitability of mine but I’ve never tried one of the others.

I had wanted something like this, too. The Hercules Ukulele Clamp (Model USP20CB) works great. It's very sturdy to the desk and on the mandolin.

d'addario guitar dock is simple and unobtrusive and very functional and clicks away when not used.

Ray, I reckon my version is different from yours. The safety bar is part of the moulding of the hanger rather than having a discrete hinge holding it. It just bends out of the way but can be locked down for extra safety. The material seems to be a sort of fibreglass/resin, dark grey in colour, and has lasted me well over ten years. If I remember it cost just under £10 when I bought it and it came in a cloth bag with the fittings for fiddle or other small-necked instruments.

Thanks John, mine is obviously the posh version as it came in a leather pouch! I bought it from the “manufacturer” at a guitar show in Leicester. He had the new version (presumably like yours) available at the time but, for wahever reason, I preferred yours. It’s clear that both versions should be able to support sufficient weight.

The Hercules, suggested above, might be easier to source in the US but I doubt it would fit in a case pocket althogh that’s not what the O/P wants to do.

There's this: https://www.jpstrings.com/braccess.htm#D'angle (May have to click on the link at the top of the page for the D'angle.)

Always thought it was cool, but never tried one. Don't know if it would work with a mando, or how stable it is, but again, cool.

It looks like this was designed for mic stands - is you mandolin fully hanging from it, or is the bottom resting on the floor?

In any case, thanks for the replies everyone. I suppose I could consider resting the bottom of the instrument on the floor as I do have carpet flooring, but something about that feels a little uncomfortable to me...

Maybe a carpet sample put on the floor just where you want it?

Orcas brand Ukulele clip hanger (OUS-C) has a clamp usable on the horizontal & vertical ,
but may need some half round pieces to add to the jaws to clamp onto a flat shelf..

here's another idea. It could hang on a drawer handle, coatrack etc.

I hang it on the bolt for the safety belt in my car.
