Default Sierra Hull & Sam Bush - Turkey in the Straw Transcription

    Hey all,

I've been doing a lot of transcribing lately and wanted to share my work! Here's a transcription I did of Sierra Hull and Sam Bush jamming on Turkey in the Straw at Grey Fox 2018.

    https://www.soundslice.com/slices/T94Mc/

If you want anything in particular transcribed, let me know and I'll put it on my list!

This is super cool, thanks for sharing. I need to start working with soundslice, it seems really slick. Great job on the transcription.

Nice! Thanks a lot, I’ll actually be learning some Bluegrass now.

The printout works great too, thanks.
Couldn't work out how to leave you a comment of thanks there though.

Do you do Irish fiddle tunes for mandolin? I would love to have Donkey reel with Dubliners.

Beautiful playing from both of them.
Sam solo’s it as a (fast) hornpipe, Sierra solo’s it like a reel. Both really smooth, Sam maybe more structured and aggressive.
Anyone notice what happens to their rhythm when she jumps in to harmonise at 4.01?
    Hornpipe or reel?
    -so cool!

    Really great job on this!!

and, you want transcription ideas? well thats great--heres one I was about to tackle, Tim Obrien and Dirk Powells instrumental duet off The Crossing Album, the tune Irelands Green Shore. Incredibly study of how Tim builds a mandolin arrangement of a simple tune with ever increasing rythmic variation.

    Keep up the good work!

    Wow! Nice work! Thanks!

If you're taking requests, I'd love to see a transcription of Andrew Marlin's work on this video:

This was a fun one. I'm pretty sure I got all the chords right, but it's hard to be sure! Cool tune

That song’s a classic, Kirk! Thanks for posting it.
It seems like a reasonably easy one to finger, but it’s the slight hornpipe-like swing bounce rhythm that makes it, along with the double-stop transition connecting the two octaves to give the rise in the B part.
    Definitely a special metronome exercise!

I think Simon’s right, the ascending double stops in the B part are something special

Thanks, very much appreciated and I think it will take me much longer to get it down than it took you to transcribe it. I had not heard of Soundslice but it is neat to see the notation go by as the video plays. I haven’t tried it yet but it looks like the video can be slowed down as well.

Yeah it’s a cool tool! My only complaint is that the printing is a little funky unless you go into the settings page and change the layout to “Paged.”

    Well, how about this one:

Curious if you are doing these transcriptions by ear or is it a function of the Soundslice tool (I'd also not heard of it until now)? If it's the latter, I'll be jumping on that bandwagon soon; if it's not I am in awe of your capabilities...

I do the transcriptions by ear, although Soundslice makes it a lot easier since you can sync the audio to the notation, slow it down, etc. I think transcribing is one of those things that gets a lot easier once you do it a few times. You start to hear the same sorts of licks and ideas reused all over the place. Knowing a bit of music theory goes a long way as well.
