Shooglenifty are a long-standing and always popular Scottish band who have always featured the mandolin.
Over the years the mandolin has been played by Iain MacLeod, Luke Plumb and currently Ewen MacPherson.
I saw them playing at a small festival in the Highlands this summer. As good as ever.

Another great West Highland band is Diamh (pronounced Dive). They currently feature Murdo Cameron (Yogi) on octave mandolin.

Both bands are seen at their best in a heaving village hall in the North West Highlands.

    Let's get a few more!

How about Ross Ainslie? Fantastic piper and low whistle player but also excellent on cittern and mandolin. An amazing musician, actually.

    Hamish Napier is really good.

Also long standing bands Capercaillie and Old Blind Dogs.

And everybody loves Michael McGoldrick (who is a member of Capercaillie).

Highland fiddler Lauren MacColl is great. Hear her on her own, with Salt House, RANT fiddle group, with Scottish Uilleann piper Calum Stewart or with her husband, Shooglenifty's Ewan MacPherson.

That should keep you going for now.

And there's Peat and Diesel, from Lewis I think. They've a Pogues-ish take on traditional music, and look to be a brilliant live band.
I grew up in Dunkeld which is next to Neil Gow's home village of Inver. I remember there being quite a lot of fiddle going on locally , but as a teenager it wasn't really my go to music. I did listen to a lot of Irish, Planxty and Chieftens as well as 80s new wave and punk.
    Peat and Diesel.

^^^ I found a great podcast over the weekend called "Irish Music Stories" that I've been dabbling in during my workday. I started with episode 31 called "The Scottish Connection" which is about the similarities and differences between Scottish and Irish music. Great listening. I have to admit, at the outset I was a bit disappointed that this show is hosted by an American, but pretty soon it became evident that she knows her stuff (and she does a great job with the show). It's very much worth a listen if you are so inclined.

Sadly this podcast, The Blarney Pilgrims, is on hiatus now and not sure if the two fellas who present it have any plans to bring it back, but there are a wealth of episodes to listen back to - music and conversation with a variety of great trad musicians. I particularly enjoyed the episode with tenor banjo player Theresa O'Grady, she's full of great stories and a wonderful player and it was excellent craic altogether!

In the podcast realm: I’d second Shannon Heaton’s Irish Music Stories.
Also, I’d highly recommend The Rolling Wave with Aofie Nic Cormaic. I have no idea of how many listeners these shows have in Ireland and Scotland but given the Rolling Wave originates on RTE, someone must be listening. The Rolling Wave and Irish Music Stories both offer great entertainment and a wealth of education. At least for me as a newcomer to The Music.

One of my favourites is a mando led track by Daimh, mentioned earlier by Dagger. It's called Bottle for Brigg, here on Spotify:

Plenty great bands mentioned earlier here including pretty much all the ones I'd have said. If you want to do some exploring, folk festival websites are a good starting point. Click on any band in the line up and you'll find youtube clips and links to where you can hear their music. Shameless plug for the Orkney Festival coming up...

Just wanted to chime back in and say what a great week it was dabbling in these new (to me) podcasts. I listened to several episodes of Irish Music Stories (this is a VERY well-produced show!) and The Blarney Pilgrims Podcast. I've dabbled in this music for years off and on and never really got anywhere, but these podcasts are a great way to take deep dive and really educate myself - and have lots of fun along the way.

I've downloaded some episodes of The Irish and Celtic Music Podcast but haven't listened yet.

Affirming what you've discovered - listening to a lot of the music will enable more facility in the playing. "Celtic" style and music from the Isles is so popular in the states, there's no dearth of programming. In MT we have a show out of Butte https://www.facebook.com/The-Rocky-R...0100760340350/

Shannon Heaton is also a fantastic trad flute player and teacher. Check out her music with her guitarist husband Matt Heaton. Good stuff!
