A bit OT, but I'm surprised that experienced players will order expensive instruments 'off plan' from any maker. You can expect a quality well made instrument from a good maker, but even Stradivari made some 'dogs' (now very expensive dogs, but $$$s don't make them sound an better). At a finer point of difference, there's no guarantee that the sound will turn out exactly as you hoped. It might be a great sound - for someone else. Personally, I'd always wait till it was made and played in so I can find out what I'm getting before splashing for a quality instrument.
I’ve done the opposite twice. Both my custom orders caused me a great deal of anxiety, and apprehension…and then boundless joy!
The first one was when I was young and impulsive, then it took me a decade to get the guts to do it again…I better get on a list soon, I’m almost down to 5 more years for another custom!
