    Default 10 Finnish folk songs

Here are 10 new arrangements of Finnish folksongs I made and recorded last summer. Compared to my previous work, here is a little new technique that could be described as melody + bass over the octave below. I also composed intros for several songs. I hope you like it. Actually, I'd be really interested to know what your favourite songs are, of course, if you have any ...

Very nice! I cannot see how you get such great tone and clarity with just fingers!

Thank you! This all comes from the instrument and the fingers. I'm recording with AKG C-1000 about 5,6ft ahead and the only correction of tone is sometimes to cut 190Hz because of the noise of car engines in the streets behind my windows. The lowest frequency of mandolin is 196Hz, so it doesn't change the actual sound anyway. I've been working on developing the tone pretty much, it seems to be getting better little by little. There are many reasons, but it seems that one idea that improves the tone is to minimize the contacts between the player and the instrument so that the instrument vibrates to the maximum. This requires certain hand and instrument holding positions. Everything else comes from there.

My favorite song was Kulkuripoika, I have made my own arrangement now:

    Enjoy!

Thanks Michael for posting this nice arrangement of the Finnish tune. I have started exploring your mandoisland website and your youtube videos - a varied and interesting selection of pieces, all with effective arrangements. I wish I had found them at the start of the pandemic, when I had more spare time at home, rather than now!

Very fine playing, Michael. You get so many textures into the tune here, and I especially like the double stops and chordal phrasing and the pizzicato/string-damping you use.
