    Default Zimnicki in classified info

Hi all. I am interest3ed in the Zimnicki mandolin that elderly has listed, but i can not get any info on it other than whatís on their website. I visited the builders website, and itís clear that they make high end gear, but thereís no reference to this model. Does anyone have first hand knowledge of this one? I know it has the 13 pin out that goes to a box that splits it to a standard guitar out and the midi out. Might be a cool feature. But i have no idea how these sound, play, what ever. So if anyone can enlighten me i would strongly consider this. Its also the second time they posted it, so Iím not sure if it was sold and returned, or if it was just removed by the seller and then resisted.

    Thanks!

It’s quite a striking instrument, and it’s at a really nice price point for a 10-string, let alone one with electronics. My main concern would be about the tone of the C string, since Elderly says that the instrument has a typical mandolin scale length. Usually, 10-stringers have a scale length between 15 & 16 inches —- longer than a mandolin’s, but shorter than a mandola’s.

I think that you're thinking of a Zeta mandolin?

Michigan luthier Gary Zimnicki builds acoustic instruments.
(He built an up-a-fourth guitar for me Ė great work, and a very nice gentleman.)

    Ah, I take it back.

I found the midi-equipped mando you're referring to, on Elderly's site.

Thanks. I had not thought about scale at all.

Decent American-made 5-string electrics typically have a scale-length of 14.7 inches (Schwabs are a little bit shorter).
    Just sayin'.

While I've not taken advantage of this service, Cafe posters have said that if you call Elderly, some of the sales staff will not only discuss the specifics of the instrument with you, but will "demo" it over the phone. Not sure that will give you all you need about the MIDI feature, but you could get more detailed information about this particular instrument.

Here's the builder's website, from the "Builders" Cafe data base. Might be worth contacting him as well.

Doubt you'll find many Cafe members who've played a MIDI-equipped mandolin by this builder, but maybe...?

Thank you. I did both. Elderly sent me a 30 second video of the instrument plugged into a Fishman amp. I appreciated them doing that but was looking for a acoustic sound as well. I did send an email to the builder and have yet to hear back. If i do I will gladly post here.
