Default NMD - Peter Coombe classical flattop

Wound up with this beautiful Peter Coombe mandolin this past week. Spent both yesterday and today playing it at gigs. Played and sounds like a dream. Definitely not a Gibson tone. But with the music I play, that's fine. In fact, it may be an advantage. It's a gorgeous instrument. The opal inlays are really amazing to look at. Neck is a wonderful profile and the radius fingerboard is very comfortable.

Details - it's #248 with Englemann spruce top, Australian Blackwood back, sides (and neck?), ebony fingerboard, Schaller GrandTune tuners, Australian opal inlays, Brekke flattop bridge.

And here is a video from today. Cell phone quality with excessive wind noise, but it does show how the instrument sounds in a duo with fiddle.

Eric, I'm so pleased to see this beautiful instrument in good hands. It sounds great in the duo context. I'm sure that it will sound better and better as time passes.

Yes, TI Mittel. Surprised the amount of sound they put out. Only have used stark in the past.

Very nice, Eric and so nice to hear you both and see you in other than the postage stamp images of Zoom. Mandolin sounds great and the playing as well.

Hi Eric, congratulations on your new mandolin. I too am a very proud owner of a Coombe flat top mandolin. Peter's choice of timber combinations, knowledge of traditional mandolin construction and natural curiosity/willingness to explore new concepts have led to this excellent mandolin design. I actually got to see yours at Peter's workshop before it made its way to you.
I absolutely love mine, it has a really wide range of tone/timbre and excellent sustain. Yours sounded as beautiful as mine and maybe even a little louder.
In your video clip, despite the phone recording and wind noise, the balance between the fiddle and mando was great. I find my flat top easily holds it own in our local session with the noisy fiddles and accordions!
Enjoy your Coombe mandolin in good health!
