Thread: 10 String Mandolin Tuners

    Default 10 String Mandolin Tuners

Hi! New member, long time member at OLF.

I am aware that this is an oft asked question. So, instead of asking where I can buy 5 on a side tuners for a mandolin, I am asking who you know that makes 10 string mandolins so I can access their tuner source. I now realize that these will be custom tuners.

    Thank you,

    Mike O'Melia

I bought some 2x4 tuners from China but they sent me 2x5, so they exist as standards.

Tom TJ Jessen at Cricket fiddle Builds 10 stringers. I have two. The 10 string mandola came with a truncated set of 6 on a plate tuning machines made for a 12 string guitar. It would be pretty easy to buy a set and carefully trim off the extra unneeded machine on each side. My tuning machines were actually from a slothead, so the rollers didn't taper and I really didn't like them, so I bought a set of individual Grover mini rotomatics (for a 12 string) and put them on. They fit and look and work good. See this thread for more info and pics.

My 10 string mandocello came with some no-name Chinese Grover knock-offs. I replaced them with individual Grover milk bottle rotomatics (again, bought a set for a 12 string). They look good and work nice and smooth.

I have these Allparts tuners, labeled as "cuatro," on my 10-string. They work, and only cost $32.

I'm sure better ones are available, but I'm satisfied with these.

When I had Bernie Lehmann build my fanned-fret, I did the research and came up with these tuners. Here's the instrument:

Another vote for Rubner five-on-a-side. I have them on my 10-string Old Wave mandocello. They are good tuners, and look great as well.

Looks like Girouard has also been using custom 10-string Rubners at least back in 2016. If you were on a budget, I might consider three sets of these geared Grover uke tuners which would cost considerably less than the custom Rubners, I would think.
