The online music journal where I work, San Francisco Classical Voice, mostly covers classical music, opera, and jazz, with occasional forays into folk and traditional music from around the globe.
We run an "Essential" series where our writers offer an introduction to the recorded works and video performances of various artists. We've never included a mandolinist before, and in honor of Thile's upcoming performance at the Greek Theatre in Berkeley with Yo-Yo Ma on cello, Stuart Duncan on fiddle, Edgar Meyer on bass, and vocalist Aoife O’Donovan, I pitched this overview of Chris Thile's work.
I'm sure dedicated listeners will have their own (and perhaps quite different) lists of "essentials," but here's my attempt to provide an intro to the uninitiated.
