Default Andy Statman Bought A Loar F5!

A couple of weeks ago Andy Statman made the move and purchased a Lloyd Loar F5 from Larry Wexer (wexerguitars.com) in New York City. His father purchased a Loar for him when he was a teenager, but Andy sold it not long after to travel to Europe and soak up the musical cultures of that region and the Middle East. So now, over 50 years later, Andy owns a Loar F5 once again!

This particular instrument is serial #73680 with the label signed by Lloyd Loar on June 13th, 1923. It was formerly owned by the famous NYC musician Eric Weissberg (Deliverance) and while it has been played over the years, it remains in excellent, original condition. Andy is completely gushing over his new "child" and has already started waking it up as only Andy can! I can only imagine what it will sound like a year from now.

This "announcement" has been approved by Mandolin Andy himself...

When a world class musician hooks up with a world class instrument, the balance in the universe is somehow restored. Fate. Its like the instrument met its rightful owner and the owner met the instrument made for him.

I, for one, can sleep better.

Well I can't honestly say I was having trouble sleeping before.

Congratulations and mazel tov, Andy! Eric Weissberg died a little over a year ago, so it was just a matter of time before the F5 changed hands. Glad it's found a home with someone so worthy.

Awesome! I'm happy that old Gal finally found a home! I think that baby has been listed for sale going on 10 years now? I may be a tad off but I know its been around for awhile! I heard Jesse Brock got himself Walter K. Bauer's Feb.18th 24 with Virzi! Very KOOL indeed! I hope he leaves the Virzi in!

And yes after some play time she'll come back to life for Andy! It took over a year for my Virzi Loar to come alive as it was really never played its whole life! Found in the 90's in a pawnshop, and the buyer didn't play it, just showed it off every now and then so I consider myself the first "real" owner as I've broke her in, original frets now show serious wear, I've nicked it, dulled the finish from my fat!

Congratulations to Andy. That's an excellent instrument in very capable hands.

If my memory is correct, Andy made a funny comment at one of the Mandolin Symposiums that when he sold that Loar as a young man, he bought a really good stereo

If he sells this Loar, he could buy an even better stereo!

This thread made me put on Old Brooklyn, which for some reason I hadn't heard for ages. Ten years since its release.
I was surprised to see that the recently sadly deceased Byrone Berline was on it.

Mighty stuff. I can't understand why it's been so long.

That album is one of the most perfect expressions of a person's unique musical backgrounds and voices out there. It could have been created by nobody other than Andy Statman and is one of those rare albums that can surprise you even after you've listened a number of times.

All this talk about Old Brooklyn reminded me of something from a few years back. My my my, almost nine years. Just a brief mention, owing to the inclusion of some tunes from the then-new release, but a very nice account of a concert rendered by our own fearless leader.

Andy's legendary blacktop mandolin pictured above is actually an A2-

Has the same specs as an A2z, but the label has it an A2-

This is not the only one designated this way.

If there's any oval-hole mandolin that can hold its own (in looks and sound) with Monroe's F5 this would be it. He doesn't really play it much anymore, but it still sounds AMAZING...

East Flatbush Blues will always be one of my favourite albums.. just the tight sound of the trio & the old rugged, worn out A2! Also like the fact that you must buy the original cd album of Shefa Records to listen..no free downloads for this one!..
